A confession is in order...

So, I have been studying Spanish with varying levels of success over the years, and married into a Spanish-speaking family, who, although very loving, would hint their preference that I speak Spanish when we visited la abuelita en Mexico.

I had heard about a new telenovela, that was supposed to be a big hit in Mexico, and began watching "La Fea" as a way to improve my comprehension. We had not watched any television since my husband and I married three years ago, but had a TV around to watch DVD's via Netflix, so it was a big change for me to become so utterly absorbed in a television program.

I attribute this fascination to the genuine talent of Angelica Vale and her counterpart, Jaime Camil. Known as "La Vale", Angelica is an absolute charmer and supremely talented. She first appeared onscreen, in the womb, when her mother, Angelica Maria, "la novia de Mexico", starred in "El Milagro de Vivir" and has consistently worked in theater and on television since. Her fearlessness and ability to take risks, with regard to her acting choices, her characterizations and appearance, in a culture that venerates a particular kind of Latina beauty, makes Vale a standout. In 2003-2005, she starred in "La Parodia", a sketch comedy show, nearly unrecognizable in her transformations into popular singers and other social and celebrity types.

Here is her take on the gossip show, "El Gordo y La Flaca", where she turns Lili Estefan (La Flaca) into a "Gorda", with bizarre and somewhat scary results.

Muchas mas chismes a venir. Pues, bienvenidos a la frontera y la tierra de la Fea. A sus ordenes y muchisimas gracias a todos.
